Train the trainees!
1st ENYGO workshop May 19th and 20th 2011 Amsterdam.

Modern (adult) education has evolved greatly over the last decades. Post graduate medical training programs in many European countries have already been changed according to the new concepts of adult education. Especially the idea that the trainees are in charge of their own training, in combination with continuous assessment and updating of the training program accordingly, has shown to improve and optimize the post graduate medical training programs. A fellowship in gynaecological oncology is another fine example of adult education and the same concepts can be used to augment training in these programs. Finally, and possibly most important, trainees who are trained according to the modern concepts are capable of using these concepts throughout their career facilitating the phenomenon of ‘life long learning.’ This will lead to highly trained specialists for whom keeping their skills and knowledge up to date and up to the expected standard is a way of life.

Hosted by the European Network of Young Gynaecological Oncologists (ENYGO) in Amsterdam, our members Pim Teunissen and Cor de Kroon will lead an introduction in two parts especially developed for trainees in gynaecological oncology. Pim is, apart from being a trainee in OBGYN, an established researcher in medical education. He has done much research about ‘learning by doing’. Cor is a gynaecological oncologist and has played a prominent and leading role in the modernization of postgraduate medical education in OBGYN in the Netherlands. Both are experienced trainers and, more important, experienced trainees.

Programme

Day 1: Effective learning

Part A: This part of the introduction will focus on the effective use of learning aims and their role in creating effective learning cycles. After completion of this part of the introduction attendees will be able to formulate SMART learning aims, construct and evaluate learning cycles, give effective feedback, extract information from feedback. Finally portfolio learning and writing a ‘personal development plan’ will be touched shortly. Preparation: formulate your own level of competence in cervical cancer surgery

Part B: lectures will be given by a current fellow gynaecological oncology and his/her tutor. Pro’s and con’s on the way effective learning is being carried out will be discussed.

Day 2: learning skills

Part A: will focus on effective learning (and teaching!) skills. After completion of this part of the introduction attendees will know the most recent ideas and concepts about how skills should be taught and assessed and will be able to learn and teach new skills according to these concepts. Preparation: teach yourself a (useless?) skill. Need inspiration? Check out the wiki on obsolete skills on http://obsoleteskills.com/skills/skills or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETsdE0WwcEU; the internet is helpful!

Part B: lectures will be given by a current fellow gynaecological oncology and his/her tutor. Pro’s and con’s on the way effective learning is being carried out will be discussed.
